I went down to Peice Hall to look around the gift shops and do some Christmas shopping, only to find there's about 6 shops remaining and no one about. What's happened! One trader told me the new plans will mean an increase in rents, and they won't be able to afford to trade there. She says it will become populated with franchise businesses and be totally modernised.
This is a very sad prospect for such a beautiful building shrowded in history. The Peice hall should be restored to it's former glory with 'alternative' shops filling the balconies, with interesting and different stuff to buy. To acheive this, why does the council not lower the rates? All those units are sat there that could be bringing in revenue! The Hall should be the main attraction of the town, where every thing happens - events, bands, fun fairs, circus', festivals, calender dates, eg. St. Patricks day, Easter celebrations, May day, markets, etc.
Preserving it's Northern English history will attract tourists and bring in revenue, not modernisation you can get anywhere.
This is a place that the people of Halifax want to be proud of.

Have you tried just giving as a website. Will allow you to raise money for the projcet if one is created for the piece hall. Can then add account details which don't show and money will go straight into account.P.S. Have you seen what Aigues-Mortes have done in france as even though it's a castle the same principle of regeneration exists.?

I have seen an amazing buzz regarding the Piece Hall this year. Really appreciate what is going on behind the scenes for this project and want to congratulate you on the design. I love the Piece Hall and think the building is wonderful and yes we all need to appreciate it and use it - footfall is important for any creation.

I agree with the previous message. The 4th entrance would increase access. It doesnt need to disturb the interior frontage. Do it.
But I am very worried about the extraneous embellishment of curved grassy steps in one upper corner. The grass looks completely out of place, out of proportion, and anyway is liable to get worn-out by over-use and look scruffy. And that shape is just too fussy for such an austerely designed building. I welcome the ground-based fountains - lovely, attractive and enlivening and making no visible alteration to the overall design when switched off. I would suggest a few proper big trees, maybe four, along the upper edge of the new leveled platform, or toward the corners,to increase the humanity of the site and soften the atmosphere. But not little bits of grass and not curves.

My dream job would be to manage the Piece Hall. It would be known as an International Celebration of Food.
It would have quality restaurants of every type eg. English, French, Chinese, Indian and every weekend there would be some kind of celebration.
A German Xmas market, an Australian Barbeque party, Chinese New Year party, Greek weekend, Scandinavian weekend.

There is so much potential and I would keep the core events that are popular eg. Summer concert, St Patricks Day and incorporate all that has been successful in the past into a full 'All Year Round Extravaganza' that incorporates each and every restaurant into its agenda.

This way. the town gets full exposure with a full calendar of events to promote, therefore the restaurants get equal exposure and potential customers, the town keeps everything that has been a success in the past and the town is put on the map as the centre of international food celebrations.

A never ending procession of visitors.

The fourth gateway must be incorporated into the plans for the Piece hall, otherwise the Piece hall will continue to solely rely on those who know about the building and those who venture into the Piece hall while they are visiting town. The fourth gateway has enormous potential to change that, it has the potential to direct every commuter and visitor arriving at Halifax by train through the Piece hall if the railway station is developed accordingly. For this to happen the current station over bridge must be removed and the station entranced relocated back to the original 1855 station building. This will allow a pedestrian oriented footpath to be built, leading up to Square road opposite the Square chapel. Making the quickest route into town via the Piece hall if the fourth gateway was constructed adjacent to the industrial museum. Unless this done, then the achieving sustainability for the Piece hall is severely affected because no matter how fancy a courtyard is, shops will only come with people and the number of people visiting the Piece hall will not change unless the fourth gateway is constructed.

The Food & Drink festival, held in the Piece Hall the weekend just gone, was brilliant! Didn't realise that Halifax had and could attract some quality produce/products: churros, french boulangerie style bread stall, turkish delicacies, champage tasting...Antony Worral Thompson! I was beside myself! The atmosphere was fresh with people from all over enjoying tastes from all over. That was just an ounce of its potential, really hope theres more events like this soon, think it's what people and the town could really do with; a bit of life!

I think the Piece Hall is wonderful and all in Halifax should be proud to support it. We were going to go to this Sunday to the food and drink festival but we cannot afford the £13.00 that it will cost. We are both pensioners, not penniless but have to be careful how we spend our money.

The Piece Hall is a wonderful place but i don't think it is getting used to its full potential. A good way to make it more of an attraction is have bands playing and more events run there. Status quo live brings in a lot of people and why not get more bands to play like a mini music festival. It is also a good way the Council can bring in money.

As said previously the piece hall has so much potential especially if the fourth gateway was built, which might have actually existed as it appears that the stone work on the east side directly opposite the west gateway has been altered after it was built.

The piece could massively benefit if the railway station was developed by relocating the current station entrance to the original 1855 building which is vastly and heavily underused. This would have so many benefits and would direct people straight up and through the piece hall, due to it being the quickest route to town, improving the councils aim of making it the town centre. So much potential but nobody seems to see it.
