NATIONAL VOLUNTEERS WEEK

Posted On: 1 Jun 2019

It's the start of National Volunteers Week; a chance to celebrate and say thank you for the fantastic contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK!

So, this week we are saying thank you to our amazing volunteers without whom we would not be able to deliver the wide range of events, workshops and heritage activities at The Piece Hall.

Over the past year 103 people have volunteered over 3800 hours of their time to support The Piece Hall Trust! From providing a warm welcome to visitors, to invigilating the art gallery, and assisting with activities for families, leading guided heritage tours and supporting events, volunteers are at the heart of what we do.

Our CEO Nicky Chance Thompson said  “We have a wonderful, dedicated team of Volunteers at The Piece Hall who support the many events, workshops and day to day activities at The Piece Hall. It’s fantastic to celebrate their contributions this week and if you feel inspired to take part this week do get in touch”.

Volunteer Heritage Guides take visitors on tours of The Piece Hall for drop in and booked groups.

Last year over 3400 people came on a tour with our heritage guide volunteers.

Our Volunteer Guides say “the best thing about volunteering is the interesting people you meet and the stories they share. Hearing people’s experiences and memories of The Piece Hall, we always learn something new with every group we can then share with others!”

Steve Roberts Visitor Services assistant says “Working with a fantastic team of 18 Volunteer Heritage Tour Guides, who bring their own individual style and passion for The Piece Hall to their heritage tours, they have been a fountain of knowledge and I have learnt so much from them. Without their flexibility and continued support our groups program would not have been as successful."

Comments received from some of our visitors;

"My Ladies had a fabulous day, the Piece Hall is wonderful."

"The tour was interesting and informative and our group had Sue, who was delightful.”

“All were very complimentary about everything - tour, shops cafes.”

“I wanted to offer our thanks to you and other staff and volunteers at the Piece Hall for making our visit so enjoyable and worthwhile yesterday. It is a remarkable building and the guides: Bryn, Peter and Susan made it so much more worthwhile as they shared their pride in and knowledge of this wonderful building--please pass on our thanks to them as well.”

Our fantastic Volunteer Heritage Guides walk visitors through nearly 240 years of history in their interactive tours. If you wold like to come on a tour please drop in to the welcome centre or you can book a group visit.

Sally, David and Carol Volunteer in our Learning Team.

Their role is to provide support for educational workshops with schools, families and groups of young people. In the past two years they have welcomed thousands of children and their families and schools to participate in activities at The Piece Hall.

Sally says, “volunteering at The Piece Hall has been a great way to make new friends.” David added that “volunteering at The Piece Hall is good fun – I enjoy working with kids” and Carol has learned more about The Piece Hall through her role, “volunteering with the school groups we learn as much about The Piece Hall as they do!”

Linda pictured, volunteers in The Piece Hall Story greeting visitors and bringing exhibitions to life. Linda says; “volunteering in the welcome centre is interesting and rewarding”.

Lucy Tallent, Visitor Service Manager says; “The volunteers in the welcome centre have a love of history and a passion for sharing The Piece Hall Story with our visitors. We really value their expert knowledge and the great welcome they extend to visitors both local and from all over the world”.

Today we celebrated National Volunteers Week by having a picnic in The Courtyard with lots of our lovely volunteers. We had games, plenty of food and drink, and we took the oppurtunity to express our gratitude for their amazing hard work.

Jo Fullman Volunteer Coordinator says “the Volunteers Week picnic is a lovely opportunity to get many of our volunteers together and celebrate everything they do. Whilst we could never repay them for the huge number of hours they give and their many skills they bring to the roles it’s great to get together over the picnic and say a huge thank you to all of them”

The Piece Hall Art Gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday thanks to our lovely team of volunteers who invigilate the space and talk to visitors about the exhibitions.

Here we have Leigh Burrows, her role is to invigilate the gallery, answer questions and inform visitors of the artwork on display.

Leigh says; “it’s been so much fun to meet so many people who have visited the Art Gallery and enjoyed all the artwork!”

Helen Moore, Head of Heritage and Engagement, said “it’s great to have so many passionate volunteers opening doors of our gallery to visitors. This year we hosted our first ever Sculpture commission and with the support of our volunteers 5875 people came to enjoy the accompanying Gallery exhibition. Thanks to their support we have many more exhibitions to come.”

As well as our core team of volunteers we have also been supported by many other local organisations to recruit volunteers to provide support at our bigger events. For the Antiques Roadshow we were supported by Square Chapel, Orange Box and Proper Job Theatre Co. as well as the local community to bring an extra 35 volunteers in for a very full of filming. We’d like to thank all the additional volunteers who came to be ‘Piece Hall volunteers’ for a day to make the event run so smoothly – we really enjoyed spotting you all on TV when the two episodes aired!

Thanks so much to our partners who have helped us over the past year with both recruitment and training; Square Chapel, Orange Box, The Industrial Museum, Proper Job Co., and St. Augustines Centre.
