SUMMARY:Mesmerine 111
DESCRIPTION:Illustrious Company presents… \nMesmerine 111\nFriday 17 April – Sunday 26 April \n11am – 4pm\, The Gallery at The Piece Hall \nFree entry \nStep into an immersive audiovisual experience designed to slow you down\, focus your mind and transport you somewhere else. \nMesmerine 111 is a 50-minute 3D sound and visual installation inspired by the frequency 111Hz – believed to encourage a deeply relaxed\, almost trance-like state. Blending sound\, storytelling and digital art\, this is an exhibition to sit with\, tune into and experience fully. \nThe accompanying 3D visual responds directly to the audio\, featuring a digital sculptural form that shifts and pulses in time with the sound – bringing emotion and meaning into a physical\, visual space. \nThis is not a traditional exhibition to walk around\, but an experience to pause for – inviting you to sit\, listen and disconnect from the outside world. \nTake time out. Tune in. Zone out. \nAlso on display – a chance to seeTo Be Invisible (2020). A powerful 10-minute work by composer Martyn Ware\, with visuals by Zachary Eastwood-Bloom and narration by Curtis Mayfield III (the son of the legendary soul singer). Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement\, the piece reinterprets Curtis Mayfield’s 1974 track\, layering spoken word with atmospheric city sounds and voices of protest.

SUMMARY:Sophie Ryder at The Piece Hall
DESCRIPTION:Sophie Ryder at The Piece Hall\nPlease note that the sculptures in the courtyard will be partially restricted from 20 – 23 May due to an event taking place. \nThe Piece Hall courtyard will host a UK first when a selection of sculptures by world renowned artist Sophie Ryder go on display in Halifax from February. The six pieces will include the 4.5m high ‘Dancing Hares’\, which has never been exhibited publicly in the UK before. The sculptures will be positioned around our 66\,000 sq ft courtyard until 23 May where they can be viewed by the public free of charge. \nSophie “works big” and her imposing sculptures which are inspired by animals and mystical creatures have been exhibited globally in Canada\, the U.S.A. Germany and Sweden\, alongside major exhibitions at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Often displayed in rural settings\, the show at The Piece Hall will represent a rare opportunity for her work to be seen in an urban setting\, against the backdrop of our Grade I listed building’s beautiful stone façade. \nThe exhibition will consist of the following pieces: Dancing Hares (bronze); The Minotaur and The Hare on Bench (bronze); Torsos (Lady Hare and Minotaur) (galvanised steel wire); Crawling (bronze); Girl with Knees Up (bronze);  Ladyhare on Boar on a Barrel. \nIn addition to the outdoor exhibition\, The Piece Hall Gallery will showcase 17 artworks including works on paper\, bronze maquettes and wire drawings and ephemera which take you on a journey into Sophie’s world. The exhibition includes ‘Robber’\, the first bronze sculpture Ryder ever cast in 1988. Ryder made the sculpture in wire but was encouraged by her friend and mentor Elisabeth Frink RA to cast it in bronze and the rest is history. Ryder still has a passion for wire and her two dimensional wire drawings\, unique to the artist\, can be seen on display including ‘Open Hand’. \nSeparately\, in the Lister Room a collection of works inspired by Sophie’s passion for her dogs will go on display. \n

SUMMARY:Haworth\, Hell & Halifax
DESCRIPTION:Haworth\, Hell & Halifax\nHaworth\, Hell and Halifax is an exhibition of sculptures and drawings by Diane Lawrenson. Lawrenson creates sensitive\, perceptive sculptures and drawings inspired by heritage\, literature\, landscape\, place\, portraiture and the figure. This exhibition explores the breadth of her work\, from her acclaimed life-size sculptures of the Bronte sisters to intensely personal depictions of emotional turmoil in ‘Freed Spirit’. Connections are constantly drawn between figure and landscape throughout her work. Lawrenson has spoken of how hills have inspired figure drawings and rock formations have led to sketches of imagined scenes and characters. \nThis exhibition is the first to show the bronze concept piece of the famous lesbian diarist\, businesswoman and Halifax landowner\, Anne Lister. Created in clay in 2019 and cast in foundry bronze in 2020\, this sculpture shows Lister in contemplation\, presenting a new interpretation of this pioneering figure. \nTitled Haworth\, Hell & Halifax\, Lawrenson makes reference to a phrase popular in the 17th century ‘From Hell\, Hull and Halifax\, May The Good Lord Deliver Us’\, originating in the Beggars’ Litany and best known from a poem by John Taylor written in 1622. The title here refers to the importance of place in her work\, whilst also alluding to the deeply emotional content that individual works explore. \nBorn in Liverpool\, 1946\, Lawrenson is based in Cumbria and has lived and worked in North Wales and West Yorkshire. She studied at Keighley College\, specialising in Ceramic Sculpture. Lawrenson has work in both private and public collections. As a Member of the Society of Women Artists\, she has exhibited at the Mall Galleries London\, where she has received several awards for her sculpture. She has been a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy since 2000. \nOPENING TIMES \nMonday to Tuesday 10am – 4pm \nWednesday 10am – 12noon \nThursday to Friday 10am – 1pm \nSaturday to Sunday 10am – 4pm \nIf you are visiting to see the exhibition outside of these hours please ask at the Visitor Centre and we will endeavour to open the gallery for you.
