New Filmmakers Hebden Bridge Picture House Take Over
A bold new generation of Calderdale filmmakers will see their work on the big screen this Friday (1pm) as a series of powerful short documentaries premiere at the Hebden Bridge Picture House.
The films have been created during the Calderdale Voices skills bootcamp in documentary production, delivered by production house and training provider Cinemateca at The Piece Hall.
The special screening will be hosted by TV actor Phil McGuinness, known for his roles in The Responder (BBC) and G’Wed (ITV).
Funded by Calderdale Council, the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, and the Department for Education, the intensive programme gave local creatives the chance to develop industry-ready skills while telling authentic stories from across the borough.
Unheard Voices. Big Screen.
Participants were challenged to create one-to-three-minute “visual poems” celebrating the overlooked, everyday lives of Calderdale’s people — from music and art to working lives, landscapes and intimate human moments.
Shot on phones and accessible kit, the focus was on creativity and voice and removing barriers to entry into media production. The result is a striking collective portrait of Calderdale in 2026 — fresh, emotional and proudly local.
Martin McQuillan, Executive Producer at Cinemateca, said:
“Calderdale has extraordinary stories that seldom make it onto our screens. In just ten days, these filmmakers have created work that is bold, personal and cinematic. This screening is about celebrating local talent and proving that world-class storytelling can start right here.”
Carl Hunter, director and co-founder of Cinemateca, added:
“What’s exciting is the confidence in these films. They’re not conventional reports — they’re expressive, visual pieces that trust image and sound. That’s a real step towards professional filmmaking.”
