Piece Hall Academy Band Lizard County Release Debut
Piece Hall Academy band Lizard County have released their very first single, recorded right here in Calderdale.
The debut double, “Your Majesty / Hard Reset” came out on Friday, 19th June.
The band are the second to join the Academy’s Artist Development programme, under the mentorship of Academy Director Aaron Casserley Stewart.
The Piece Hall Academy offers a variety of free training courses and development programmes to upskill young people and support adults in retraining, increasing their job prospects in music, performance, production and live events.
Aaron Casserley Stewart said:
“It’s an exciting time for the band who’ve only been together for a matter of months. This is exactly what The Academy is about, supporting new talent and helping them rehearse, record and hopefully get discovered.
“But it’s more than that, it’s about developing the next generation of creatives and live events professionals helping them navigate the music industry and move into sustainable long-term careers right here in Calderdale.”
The two new tracks show both sides of Lizard County. Your Majesty” is a driving, grungy alternative indie rock track, exploring ideas of resentment with a sarcastic tone, while “Hard Reset” is a softer, more jangly track which dives into ideas of longing and regret.
Nathan Bowen, lead guitarist and co-songwriter for Lizard County said:
“We chose to put Your Majesty and Hard Reset together because it offers two different feels for our music, one is more explosive and direct whereas the other is softer and laidback. The pair together are good displays of our influences and songwriting.”
Both tracks were recorded in a day at Mark It Zero Studios in Hebden Bridge. The new high end recording studio is run by Felix Rashman and Archie Dewis who have production credits between them including Robbie Williams, The 1975, Lilly Allen, The Lounge Society, Herbie May and Flying on the Ground.
Lizard County credit the producers for developing the sounds that they were aiming for.
Alastair Bentley, vocals, rhythm guitarist and co-songwriter for Lizard County said:
“Our songwriting process can vary between different songs but always has myself and our lead guitarist, Nathan Bowen, leading the charge together.
“Your Majesty started as a jam with each member of the band adding their own bits to it, I went home later that day and wrote the lyrics, eventually creating the track we have today. Hard reset was a different story, as Nathan wrote the guitar riff at home and brought it to rehearsals to work on as a group.”
