UK indie stars team up with Piece Hall Academy band on massive new single and music video

Piece Hall Academy band The Caymans are releasing their first ever music video directed by Carl Hunter from The Farm, for their new track produced by New Order’s Tom Chapman!

The Piece Hall Academy is an umbrella project offering a variety of free to access training courses and mentorships to upskill young people, support people in retraining, increase job opportunities and creating sustainable careers in music, performance, recording, production and live events.

The Caymans were the very first band to join the Academy’s Artist Development programme and “Nowhere, NW” is their third single, which is being tipped for big things.

The band are currently preparing for their biggest show to date, supporting The Wombats at TK Maxx presents Live at The Piece Hall this summer.

Luca Finelli, vocals and rhythm guitar for The Caymans said:

“Nowhere, NW” is the first song that we all wrote together in the same room completely from scratch and a turning point for a new way forward of a more hands-on approach to writing from all members of the band.

“It’s a song we are all extremely proud of, we love it and we hope that other people find a connection with it and fall in love with it too.”

New Order’s bass player, Tom Champman, was connected to The Academy by a mutual friend and was keen to share his skills and experience with the up-and-coming band.

Tom Chapman said:

“It was a real pleasure to work with the Caymans in the studio. The song demonstrates the band’s spirit and sound at their very best. I tried to capture every section with pure energy while still allowing the melody and lyrics to breathe. The result is a cool track with swagger and raw power that needs to be played loud.”

Carl Hunter’s involvement with the project started when he was running a film training course with his company Cinemateca at The Piece Hall and saw an opportunity to use his talent and passion to support Academy students.

Carl, also a bassist, with iconic Liverpool band The Farm, is now an award-winning filmmaker known for his television documentaries and the feature film “Sometimes Always Never”, starring Bill Nighy.

Carl Hunter said:

“Recently, I was honoured to take on the role of ambassador and mentor for The Piece Hall Academy, a position that resonates deeply with my passion for supporting emerging talent in the music scene. With years of experience in the industry, I’ve had the privilege of guiding new bands toward securing deals.

“When I was introduced to this brilliant new band from Halifax, I was excited to collaborate with them. What made this project truly special was that the video was brought to life by students from Cinemateca’s Skills Bootcamp Documentary course. Their creativity and dedication shone through in every frame, resulting in a vibrant and engaging video that perfectly captures the essence of the song. It was a fantastic experience to witness new filmmakers in action.”

Toby Walker, drums and percussion for The Caymans said:

“Carl and the whole Cinematica Productions crew were incredible to work with. As we had never really filmed a music video, we didn’t really know what to expect but they made sure we always felt comfortable in the process and took great care of us. They knew exactly what they wanted and how to get the best out of us.

“We can’t thank them enough, especially Carl, who’s already an inspiration to us, for their time and efforts. We can’t wait for everyone to see what we created together.”

The Academy is run by The Piece Hall’s Programme and Events Director Aaron Casserly-Stewart who has over 30 years’ experience in the music industry. His credits include being a jazz vocalist and former singer with the three-time Grammy Award winning group The Sounds of Blackness, business manager for Erik “Blu2th” Griggs (Dr. Dre), Chair of Jazz North and former Vice-Chair of Leeds Conservatoire.

Academy Director Aaron Casserley Stewart said:

“The Academy is all about developing opportunities to support the next generation of creatives and it’s been fantastic seeing how far this band have already come.  Being mentored by indie icons like Tom and Carl is really accelerating their growth and we’re so grateful to them for giving back.

“The reaction to this new track has been amazing so far with national radio play on the way and the video just takes it to the next level. The Academy has also organised for the band to support The Wombats at Live at The Piece Hall in August, so a summer of Caymania awaits!”

The Academy provides short courses, long term mentoring, industry experience days, and is launching two Level 3 courses accredited by University of the Arts London in partnership with Calderdale College. The Level 3 Diplomas in Live Production Arts and Music Performance / Production are recruiting now to start in September.
